Beautiful antique lampshade About Magnolia Retreat Accommodation Warburton

Jenny and Ian Godson fell in love with Magnolia Country Retreat and bought the almost 100 year-old house in late 2004. They added to the already extensive gardens and began to refurbish and restore the house to its original beauty and beyond.

Today, Jenny and Ian feel privileged to continue the property's B & B tradition, welcoming people to Warburton to share their hospitality and the delightful garden environment at Magnolia Country Retreat.

A Short History of Magnolia Country Retreat Bed and Breakfast

Gold Mining in Yankee Jims

Warburton was originally established in 1863 during the Gold rush, and was previously known as Yankee Jims - named after James McAvoy, the man who discovered alluvial gold in the Upper Yarra. Later it took its name Warburton, from the gold commissioner, Warburton Carr.

Warburton's Beauty is Realised

By the turn of the century Warburton had left its gold mining roots, and logging and tourism became the town's primary industries. In 1901 the first train from Lilydale to Warburton arrived, and many guesthouses were built to enable people from Melbourne to enjoy the clean mountain air, water and cooler summers. In 1907 the first doctor arrived.

Melrose, Magnolia Cottage, Magnolia Cottage Country Retreat

In 1908 a logger, Lionel Rose, built a four roomed cottage on over 5 acres of land, calling it "Melrose". After many years and a few subdivisions, Melrose was renamed "Blackwood House" in the 1970’s and a 10 square extension was added to the back in 1981. In 1990 it was renamed "Magnolia Cottage" and became a Bed & Breakfast.  The owner's daughter painted the "Poppy" canvas which still hangs above the mantle in the "Poppy" room.

In 1995 it changed hands and was renamed "Magnolia Cottage Country Retreat". The new owners refurbished and added to the already extensive gardens, establishing an excellent reputation for their gracious hospitality and gastronomic delights over many years.

Magnolia Country Retreat Now and in the Future

Jenny and Ian bought the house in late 2004 when it was no longer being run as a B & B business. They have renovated and refurbished the beautiful home, adding ensuites to the Blue and Poppy Room and opening a third bedroom, the Garden Room, for honeymooners and quiet romantic getaways. The Godsons love being a part of  the cottage's long history and B & B tradition, and enjoy sharing the beauty of Warburton and Magnolia Country Retreat with their visitors.
